What we do

Brentwood a Becket Rotary is committed to raising funds and giving our monetary support to local, national and international charities.

Fundraising

Half marathon

Picture

Since 1981, Brentwood a Becket Rotary Club has been the organisers of the Brentwood Half Marathon, which is probably the most successful fund-raising event in Essex. During that time we have raised over £4million for charity.

100% of all money raised goes direct to worthwhile causes, local, national and international. The last couple of years have seen the involvement of three other organisations – namely Brentwood Theatre, Saint Francis Hospice and the Brentwood Running Club who now link in with Brentwood à Becket Rotary. This consortium of four have successfully blended together to make the organisation of this event a lot easier and less stressful.

Starting with the 2026 event, the Half Marathon's main sponsor will be Barry Hearn from Matchroom Sport supported by Baker Labels (previous main sponsor), and the event will now be called the Matchroom Brentwood Half Marathon.

Quiz night

We hold an annual quiz night at the Anglo European School in Ingatestone, where we attract a huge number of people. Anywhere between 225 and 350 keen quizzers attend each year (our record is 388!). Since 1991, we have amassed nearly £75,000.

Christmas collection

Father Christmas makes an appearance on three occasions preceding Christmas. We shake our buckets in Hutton Road, Shenfield, and we’ve even moved with the times and operate card readers for those who prefer a cashless society!
Each year we nominate two charities to benefit. Since 2008, we have raised over £40,000.

Giving

LOCAL
Since 1980, we have given away (in the words of Harry Enfield) loads of money! We have a few charities who we support regularly like SNAP (Special Needs and Parents), Saint Francis Hospice and Daily Bread, but hundreds of needy causes have benefited from the funds that we have raised over the years.

NATIONAL
National charities like Essex Air Ambulance, RNLI, Guide Dogs and Prostate Cancer UK have all benefited, and we continually look for those who are most needy to support.

INTERNATIONAL
We particularly like to support disaster-hit regions, whether it is famine, earthquake, hunger or even the troubles in Ukraine which is in the front of most peoples thoughts at this time.

Youth

We have supported various projects and competitions both now and in the past:
  • Youth Speaks and Debate
  • Young Writer Competition
  • Young Musician of the Year

International

ROTARY FOUNDATION
This Rotary charity is one of the largest in the world. Each year it distributes around £54 million to worthy causes worldwide and has donated in the region of £3 billion since its inception.

END POLIO NOW
Part of the Rotary Foundation remit has been to rid the world of polio. Since 1985, Rotary has all but eliminated the threat of this terrible disease, with an overall funding in the region of £1.25 billion, it has been able to immunise over 2.5 billion children during that time.
If you’re ready to become a member of a worthwhile cause, get in touch by giving us a call or dropping us an email. We look forward to welcoming you!

Community service

Handing out money is one thing, but putting something back into the community is another important aspect of Rotary, and there have been many ways that Brentwood à Becket has achieved that over the years.

Currently, these include:

ZOO TRIP
Each year we take a coachload of children from the SNAP charity to Colchester Zoo for the day.

POPPY APPEAL
Members of Brentwood à Becket support the Royal British Legion by selling poppies within the Brentwood Sainsbury's store

DAILY BREAD
Some of our members help out at the local food bank.
