A little Rotary historyBrentwood à Becket Rotary Club was chartered in 1980 and was formed as a club that meets in the evening. Originally, most clubs met at lunchtime, but due to pressure of work this closed the door to prospective members who would make excellent Rotarians but couldn’t spare the time during a busy working day to attend a weekly Rotary meeting.
In 1980 there was already a club in the town called Brentwood Rotary Club, so we had to come up with an alternative name and that was Brentwood à Becket – a reflection of Brentwood’s early history as a stopover for pilgrims as they journeyed between London and Canterbury. Thomas Becket was martyred in Canterbury, and Brentwood now contains the ruins of a chapel dedicated to him. |
